“We congratulate the people of Madagascar for participating peacefully in the first round of presidential elections.
The United States shares the hopes of the Malagasy people that this historic election will be the first step to the return of democratic rule in Madagascar. We also encourage the Malagasy authorities to ensure that the tallying of election results proceeds in an orderly fashion and produces a credible result. The Malagasy people have suffered too long from the devastating social and economic effects of the 2009 coup d’état. They deserve elected leaders who reflect the will of the public.
The United States remains committed to the people of Madagascar and is the country’s largest bilateral donor, providing nearly $60 million (132 billion Ar) for assistance in 2013, with a focus on health programs and food security. We do not recognize the current de facto government, but we do recognize and seek to help address the legitimate needs of the Malagasy people.”

Les Etats-Unis partagent l’espoir du peuple Malagasy selon lequel cette élection historique constituera la première étape vers le retour à l’état démocratique à Madagascar. Nous tenons par la même occasion à encourager les autorités Malagasy à s’assurer que la collecte des résultats se passe dans l’ordre et produise des résultats crédibles. Le peuple Malagasy a souffert pendant trop longtemps des effets sociaux et économiques dévastateurs du coup d’état de 2009. Ils méritent désormais des dirigeants élus qui représentent la volonté du public.
Les Etats-Unis demeurent engagés après du peuple Malagasy et demeurent le plus important bailleur bilatéral du pays, offrant près de 60 millions $ (Ariary 132 milliards) d’assistance en 2013, se concentrant surtout sur des programmes pour la santé et la sécurité alimentaire. Certes, nous ne reconnaissons pas le gouvernement de fait, mais nous reconnaissons les besoins du peuple Malagasy, et tentons d’y répondre.”
